The first real thing we did in Yellowstone was the Artisan pots. We woke up fairly early and drove up into the park. The morning was a little chilly but it soon warmed up and we were shedding our jackets. It was amazing to see these natural wonders that were so colorful and steamy. We saw this cool boiling area that kept shooting white stuff up at us. It looked like plaster of paris. All the kids wanted to know why. Why is it boiling, why is it white, why can't we walk on the ground.
William was so sure it was acid and that if he threw something in the pots they would sizzle and burn up. No matter what we told him he was sure it would work. So we finally gave in and let him toss a twig in one of the pots. It did absolutely nothing. Just floated. He was disappointed but thought maybe that was just a faulty pot. During the next hike they had a museum. In that museum they had an acid chart to show the acidity of the water versus things like vinegar and lemon juice. Lemon juice was way more acidic than the water. We pointed this out to William who was sorely disappointed.
