We drove over to the east side of Oahu to Kualoa Ranch.
Scott being the history buff that he is wanted to go check out this ancient fishing pond.
This was no ordinary fishing pond. This place was built by kings orders that made a wall 5 feet tall by 5 feet wide. It was designed with these grates on either end of the wall with slate small enough for little fish to get through and leaving the bigger fish in the ocean. The small fish would be attracted to the algae in the bracken water and feed and grow big. Too big to fit back through the grates. When it was time to harvest they opened the sheet that closed off the grate causing the fish to swim toward it. Then the fisher would just spear the fish. Really quite ingenious. Aside from the history lesson this was another stunning example of Hawaii's beauty. It was so nice to drift across the pond and enjoy all the beauty that God has created for us.
While we were here we tried our hand at cracking open Macadamia nuts. They were delicious. If we happened to smash a nut too badly the chickens were lined up eagerly awaiting our spoils.
Speaking of chickens, there were chickens all over Hawaii. I took a few pictures just for me niece Jenni, she loves chickens.
